Keeping them laughing and then some: The art of stand-up

As part of an art form intended primarily to make people laugh, stand-up comedy is peculiar in that it also brings awareness, and sometimes to an extent, pathos. But even then, stand-up comedy aims for a laugh.

Stand-up comedy is very observational, with comedians getting their material from what's happening around them. Their stories can be about their personal experiences as "rednecks," like the ones Jeff Foxworthy and his cohorts in the Blue Collar Comedy Group tell, or "fish-out-of-water" whoppers like Russell Peters and Jo Koy, both children of immigrants, narrate. Jim Gaffigan, as another example, has made a career out of his insights on fatherhood and yes, Hot Pockets.

Others, like George Carlin, Louis C.K., and Janeane Garofalo have used the stage to give their biting commentary on important issues like the sociopolitical state of the world. Topics like women's rights, race, world leaders, religion, fast food diets, and celebrities are fair game to comedians, who can come from either side of the coin.

Medical conditions have also been referenced by stand-up comedians. Maria Bamford, for instance, has talked about her bipolar disorder in a documentary series, while Tig Notaro notably spoke of her breast cancer and double mastectomy in a now-legendary set. These are difficult themes, for sure, but the shows have been critically-lauded and beloved by audiences.

But stand-up comedy isn't always just a comedian standing onstage with a microphone. Some comics use props and music to enrich their acts like Steve Martin, who's been known to wear a fake arrow through the head and play the banjo. Demetri Martin gets musical too, with a harmonica and guitar combo at times, but he also switches it out with a giant notepad and pen to illustrate his off-kilter ideas.

The great thing about well-executed stand-up comedy is that audience will find something to relate to or think about, regardless if it's about "little world" or "big world" issues, to borrow George Carlin's categories, or even just about silly wordplay.

Sample some of the funniest and freshest stand-up comedy acts around at Latitude 360's Latitude Live stage. Visit this website for show schedules and updates.

Axis Bar takes center stage at Albany, New York

Latitude 360, the all-around entertainment and restaurant giant, has landed in New York. In partnership with Crossgates Mall in Albany, the restaurant/entertainment venue fills the 50,000 square-foot of the mall which was once inhabited by merchants like H&M, Best Buy Mobile, AT&T, and Brookstone.

The latest venue features amenities similar to the restaurant chain’s Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and Pittburgh branches. The move to situate Latitude 360 within Crossgates Mall was a big part of the strategy to lure in customers, amid the rising tide of online shopping, and to give them more reasons to go to the mall apart from shopping. The Albany branch is geared to be an urban destination for dining and entertainment.

Geographically-challenged Albany, given its substantial land area compared to New York City, requires car to drive around night spots. Last call time is set at 4:00 p.m., thus after-hours businesses need more boost especially in entertainment and nightlife. This opens opportunity for Axis Bar and Stage, the main highlight and go-to nightclub for drinks and high-energy dancing Latitude 360. It turns into a seen-and-be-seen nightclub every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Great food and good music fill the venue with good vibes and energy as DJs mix latest club tunes with aid of HD TVs for a full visual and audio experience. Every visit is one of a kind as Axis Bar and Stage also provides venue for magic shows, wine tasting events, and band competitions.

Party the night away at Latitude 360. It provides a full 360 experience in dining, entertainment, and nightlife. Follow this Twitter account for news and updates as well as schedules of events.

I Will Have the Special with No Adult

Any parent would envy the youth, innocence, curiosity and easy excitement that fuel their kids. Naturally, the adult in all of us looks back at moments in our childhood with great yearning. Some of us might remember the time we played Super Mario Bros. on the first Nintendo, the gaming console that scrapped the joystick for the contemporary standard gamepad where thumbs and fingertips rule. Before this, however, we would go to the arcade and stand enthralled as digitized figures tried to thwart our efforts of coming out victorious while our character(s) struggled on through perilous situations.

Now, how about the chance to relive some of those memories standing at the console battling enemies galaxies away after just finishing an award-winning ½ pound certified Angus burger with a healthy side of French fries? Would likely sound good to anyone with taste buds, which is why so many people flock to Latitude 360, a food and entertainment destination unlike any other out there.

Latitude 360 entered the restaurant industry by openings its flagship restaurant doors in Jacksonville, FL at the very beginning of 2011 in January. In short time, two more opened up, first in Pittsburgh, PA and then in Indianapolis, IN. A fourth is prepping to launch in Albany, NY just before the beginning of 2015. And additional locations are already in the works in Plymouth, MA, just outside of Boston, and at a Minneapolis suburb shopping center in Minnesota. Their spaces range from 35,000 to 85,000 sq. ft., and the reasoning behind their enormity is not only due to aforementioned game rooms that house upwards of 70+ arcade video games, but also movie theatres, upscale fine dining rooms, multiple bars, movie theatres, a cigar bar, and state-of-the-art bowling alleys ready to host novices and seasoned players alike.

Aside from the crashing strikes happening in the bowling alley and on the HDTVs playing the latest ball game on upwards of huge 200’ flat screens; youths taking over dynasties in some far away galaxy with just .50 cents, and families watching the latest Pixar release to see if the antagonist is really that naïve and unguarded, there is the food at 360 Grille. And not standard restaurant food either. 360 Grille serves great and unforgettable contemporary-American food.

Classic bruschetta, crab and spinach dip, southwestern rolls, and Asian chicken lettuce wraps can precede a variety of soups and salads before diving into tacos, hand tossed brick oven baked pizza, expertly crafted sandwiches and wraps, certified Angus beef ½ pound burgers, along with wood grilled steak, pork chops, chicken, shrimp, lobster, and salmon.

For some, eating is sort of a game; always striving to find better out there. You can be rest assured that at Latitude 360, they bring more than just fun into the dining out experience: they bring an unprecedented passion combining food and fun. Visit their website to see for yourself.

Turning the Page on Fine Dining

Ever take the kids out to eat and realize that after the appetizers, after the main courses, your usually a little at a loss for words as far as additional entertainment goes. We usually wrap things up by asking how the meal was, if anyone is still hungry and then getting the bill and going home. Naturally this does not apply to every scenario but, aside from a few exceptions, going out to dinner has turned into an experience that is somewhat formulaic. Luckily, some rather inventive investors felt the same way, and decided to add a whole new meaning to taking the kids out for dinner.

Latitude 360 offers a dining experience that can only be described as overwhelming. Firstly, there is the size. They have locations in Jacksonville, FL, Indianapolis, IN, Pittsburgh, PA, and Albany, NY, which can range from a sprawling 35,000 sq. ft. space all the way up to a massive 85,000 sq. ft., literally a football field and a half of dining and entertainment. Inside, you will find multiple areas where guests can eat their top-quality contemporary-American cuisine. Choose from the main dining room, the different bars, outdoor patio, the pizza bar, or even the Cinegrille, an upscale movie theatre equipped with just the right amount of room to sit comfortably while eating Rib eye steak and watching the latest blockbuster on the big screen.

If you think Latitude 360 would be an overwhelming experience, then you would be right. Fortunately for visitors, each restaurant is staffed with dedicated, enthusiastic crews who focus on making sure every guest has an unforgettable experience by delivering only the very best food and drink. Quality is their top priority, and when your food arrives you will see that their passion is genuine.

The soups, dressings, marinades, and sauces are made from scratch every day using only the very best and freshest of ingredients. Crisp salads, hand tossed pizzas, expertly-crafted sandwiches, and wood grilled entrees are all part of the menu at Latitude 360. Do yourself a favor and check out their website. The next time a trip comes up and you happen to be close to one of their locations, visit an upscale and truly unique evolution in the dining and entertainment experience.
